Luis Laguna
Luis Laguna joined Metlen Energy & Metals in 2018 where he manages the North America Region, overseeing the company’s overall project investment and execution activities in utility-scale solar PV, storage, wind, and green hydrogen/ammonia, in the Canada, US, Mexico, and Central America markets. Luis is an experienced infrastructure investment professional with an international track record in renewable energy. Since 2007, he has developed, structured, acquired, contracted (PPA), financed, and put into operation more than 2.4 GW of utility-scale solar PV power plants in Canada, Chile, Puerto Rico, Italy, France, and Spain, representing ~US$3 billion in total capital invested while working for global power generation companies such as Metlen (2018 to date), Sonnedix Solar (2011 to 2014) and AES Corporation / AES Solar (2007 to 2011).
At Metlen, Luis has been responsible for originating, acquiring, and managing the completion of development of a five-project portfolio of more than 1,590 MW in Canada. In Chile he performed a similar role with another project portfolio of more than 750 MW. A key achievement in this role in Chile was leading the negotiation and signing of a 1.1 TWh/year long-term PPA with Enel in Chile, one of the largest solar PPAs as of today, globally.
From 2014 to 2018 Luis provided, through his consulting firm Enerlux Power, development, structuring, financing, and acquisition advisory services to investors in the renewable and conventional energy sectors. His career also includes 4 years of corporate finance advisory experience with BNCP (2006 to 2007) and Arthur Andersen (1999 to 2002). While at these firms, he worked on 15 transactions with a total value of US$3.2 billion performing capital raising, valuations, divestitures, and M&A. In addition to his career in energy and finance, he also worked as a strategy consultant for BCG from 2004 to 2006.
Has extensive experience in: (i) origination, development, acquisition, financing, and construction of utility-scale solar energy projects; (ii) closing PPAs; (iii) structuring and execution of equity and debt investments in energy projects; (iv) M&A and divestitures; (v) financial modeling; (vi) due diligence; (vii) negotiation of transaction documentation; (viii) corporate strategy and restructuring; and (ix) crafting co-investment strategies and building relationships with investors and project developers.
Luis received his MBA from MIT’s Sloan School of Management and a B.A. in Accounting and Finance from ITESM.
